Power Ten Development, LLC in collaboration with the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association has introduced an application designed to support the gROW Tulsa RowingSTEM Curriculum.
The app is compatible with the Concept2 rowing machine featuring a PM5 monitor.
The RowingSTEM app offers outreach programs and rowing clubs the opportunity to deliver educational experiences that enhance understanding of science and mathematics through the lens of rowing. Its data collection feature allows for easy export of information into a Comma Separated Values file for sharing via email, text, or airdrop with other devices and programs.
Features:
- Real-time data collection and analysis for various metrics including Stroke Number, Time Elapsed (Seconds), Distance (Meters), Stroke Rate (Strokes/Minute), 500m Split (seconds), Power per stroke (Watts), Heart Rate (Beats Per Minute) - requires heart rate monitor belt for this feature, Peak Force (Newtons), Average Drive Force (Newtons), Drive Length (Meters), Drive Time (seconds).
- Derived metrics such as % of stroke complete when peak force is reached, Impulse (Average force x time) Work Per Stroke (Joules), Stroke Speed (Meters/Second).
- Force Curve Points for each force curve enabling analysis of the force curve's shape. Please note that this feature is not supported on older PM5 monitor versions.
Data Analysis:
- Visualization of rowing data through a graphing interface where users can select variables to plot on the X and Y axis. There are two graph options available: a scatter plot allowing any two variables to be plotted against each other, and a line graph for plotting a variable against time, distance, or stroke count.
Data Export:
The recorded metrics are stored in a CSV file format that can be easily exported from the app via multiple transmission methods (text, email, etc...).
How Much Power Can You Create Lab Activity?
Students can synchronize the app with the PM5 monitor to receive real-time feedback on the electrical device they could power based on their current power output in Watts.
RowingSTEM Curriculum Access:
Users can access the RowingSTEM curriculum in PDF format through the app. These lab activities are exportable to facilitate the generation of hard copies for students engaging in RowingSTEM-based exercises.
